2018 Theme: Polis and the Citizen

For the second year in a row, the Athens & Epidaurus Festival will organize the programme Educating audiences in ancient drama, an Epidaurus Lyceum parallel activity, in collaboration with the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of the Peloponnese. The project is supported by the Municipality of Nafplio and the Administration of the Peloponnese and Argolis, with the cooperation of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Argolis and the Primary and Secondary Education Schools of Argolis.

 

DESCRIPTION

The Educating audiences in ancient drama programme consists of short experiential theatrical workshops and lectures on dramatic texts/plays that are to be presented in Epidaurus. These workshops are run by experienced theatre educators, theatre researchers, directors, and other artists, under the scientific supervision of Athens & Epidaurus Festival and the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of the Peloponnese. Educators, students of various levels and even ordinary citizens comprise the target audience of these workshops. The activities are organized and supervised by Georgina Kakoudaki, director and Athens & Epidaurus Festival co-curator for educational programmes; Christina Zoniou, who teaches acting at the Department of Theatre Studies, University of Peloponnese; Angeliki Tsakona, theatre researcher and educator for the Creative Children workshop of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival. Experienced theatre educators from the Argolis area have also been selected to participate as motivators.

The workshops, educational activities, and lectures will fall under the general theme of Epidaurus Festival 2018: Polis and the Citizen. Certain plays which are slated for the 2018 Epidaurus Festival will be studied by workshop participants, minors and adults alike.

 

ACTIVITY 1: PRIMARY EDUCATION PROJECTS

Selected theatre educators will adopt a student-centred and group-centred method, with a focus on games, creativity, and performative processes through collaborative invention.

Projects in schools

November – December 2017: School projects outside the Municipality of Nafplio

January – June 2018: School projects in the Municipality of Nafplio

Projects will be realized in selected schools and will be organized by two theatre educators, with the involvement of teachers. Meetings will be held on school premises after school hours.

Educators’ training

For all primary education teachers of Argolis who are interested in participating in the programme, along with their students.

Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus

With the participation of students, teachers, and Festival artists (June 2018).

 

ACTIVITY 2: SECONDARY EDUCATION PROJECTS

Selected theatre educators will adopt a student-centred and group-centred method, with a focus on games, creativity, and performative processes through collaborative invention.

The project is adapted to the specific needs and characteristics of each age group (ages 13-15 and 16-18).

School projects

November – December 2017: Projects in schools outside the Municipality of Nafplio

January – June 2018: Projects in the Argolis area

Projects will be conducted in the form of a three-hour meeting in schools, supervised by two theatre educators, with the involvement of teachers. Meetings will be held on school premises after school hours.

 

ACTIVITY 3: ADULT EDUCATION

Adult education programme for Argolis residents.

Projects involving local Parent-Teacher Associations, specifically involving parents who wish to attend the programme on their own or alongside their children in the evening. Meeting will be held on school premises.

Time frame of Education audiences in ancient drama: November 2017 – July 2018.
